Biographical Context
The guidebook represents one of Buchanan’s earliest publications and is among the first to document the popular hiking trails of Waterton Lakes National Park. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Buchanan became a distinguished Canadian art historian, author, and arts administrator. The son of Lethbridge Herald publisher Senator W.A. Buchanan, he founded the Canadian Film Institute in 1935, established the National Film Board of Canada’s stills division, and served as an associate director of the National Gallery of Canada.
